Nut butters and creams are one of the most popular health food products. As a result, they are experiencing a huge boom, bringing with them a plethora of nut butter flavours. Nut butters are rich in healthy fats, protein, fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Nut butters are added to porridges, yogurts, puddings, on pancakes, toast or you can just eat them plain. They are often used as additives in baking or to make sauces in Asian cuisine. Long‑term storage can cause the fat to separate from the solid component. However, this is not a fault, just stir the butter properly.

Which nut butter to choose?

Nut butters are made by roasting and then grinding nuts to the desired consistency - you can usually choose from a soft or crunchy nut butter. Your choices are:

• 100% nut butters are made from only one type of nut, with no added sugar or other additives, so their unique flavour is preserved. Taste 100% nut butters made from cashews, pistachios, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, coconut or peanuts.
• Protein spreads are enriched with high quality protein (usually whey or milk). These spreads are especially popular among individuals who watch their protein intake. You can try, for example, our Cheat Spread. But beware, they don't last long!
• Sweet nut creams can no longer do without added sweeteners. Beware of artificial sweeteners, which some butters are literally packed with. If you're looking for quality, try butter Sweet Nuts which comes in over 10 flavours - and one is better than the other.
• Salted Nut Creams aren't very common, but they don't lose any of their flavour. It's great in savoury dishes or as a dip.

Be sure to check with each butter to see if it's really nut butter or cream, or if it just looks like it. A good quality nut butter should not contain palm oil, high levels of sugar, artificial colours or preservatives.
