What are booster rubbers for

Resistance exercise bands are simple but effective sports aids that boast great versatility and are suitable for indoor and outdoor gyms as well as for exercising at home. The elastics can be used in a supportive way (reducing the total body weight during exercise), e.g. trapeze curls, or in a resistive way (increasing the resistance and making the exercise more difficult), e.g. squats or bench‑press.

Types of resistance bands

Rehabilitation rubbers

Thin latex elastics with two separate ends and a length of 1,5‑2 metres are primarily intended for rehabilitation and stretching, but can also be used during conditioning or weight training. Rehabilitation elastics have low recoil, allowing for smooth stretching, and do not twist back when stretched. They can be easily tied and looped as needed.

Long resistance rubbers

Latex elastics, known as "large loop" or "jar" elastics, are the most widely used type of weight training elastics, have a circumference of around two metres and are used to exercise the whole body. Due to their durability and higher resistance levels, they are used as trapeze aids during push‑ups or dips.

Short resistance rubbers

Often referred to as a "mini loop", short latex elastics are less than one metre in circumference and about 5 cm wide. They are suitable for making lower body exercises more difficult or as a rehabilitation tool to improve stability and prevent injuries.

Booty bands

Booty bands are textile resistance bands with a circumference of 60‑90 cm. The rubber is suitable for strengthening the buttocks, thighs and the whole lower body. Unlike short latex elastics, booty bands are more comfortable, stronger and have more resistance - making them a more effective exercise tool.

Resistance of exercise bands

The basic characteristic of workout elastics is their resistance. The choice should be based on fitness level, weight and use - a different rubber is needed to facilitate trapeze push‑ups than for stretching. The basic division of weight training rubbers is into three categories:

  • light resistance elastics (approx. 6‑15 kg),
  • elastics with medium resistance (approx. 15‑22 kg),
  • heavy resistance elastics (approx. 22‑30 kg).

For ease of orientation, the different resistance levels are colour coded, but the same colour rules do not apply across all manufacturers. Generally, light resistance rubbers are yellow, orange and red, medium resistance rubbers are green and heavy resistance rubbers are blue, purple and black. You can tell the right rubber for resistance exercises by feeling the muscle effort after 10 repetitions.

If you have trouble choosing the right weight of rubber, the easiest solution is to buy a set of resistance rubbers, allowing you to gradually move to higher weights.

The material of the resistance bands

Latex rubbers

Latex resistance rubbers are the more common variant of weight training rubbers. They come in all widths and lengths, and have a large range of resistance levels. The rubbers are resistant to a variety of microorganisms, moisture, and can be easily washed. Over time, they wear out and can crack on contact with a sharp edge.

They are versatile and can be used to strengthen or stretch almost any part of the body. Latex rubbers are unfortunately very uncomfortable - contact with bare skin often causes the rubber to roll, which is associated with hair pulling or pinching.

Textile rubbers

Textile resistive rubbers are made of a durable elastic material and have an anti‑slip strip on the inside. These are relatively short rubbers and usually the greater the resistance, the greater the circumference of the rubber. The rubbers are machine washable.

Textile exercise rubbers are suitable for people with latex allergies, plus they are more comfortable and pleasant in contact with the skin, they do not pull hair or irritate. They have great applications in lower body strengthening, yet are less versatile than latex ones. Because of their relatively greater resistance, they are not recommended for complete beginners. They may stretch with time.

Rubber exercise is becoming an essential part of both home and group exercise, either as a supplement or as a source of primary resistance. At Aktin you can choose from Vilgain, Power System or Kine‑MAX brands.
