Sports Energy Gels
Energy gels are a concentrated source of energy that helps replace lost energy during training, racing, or a demanding hike. The main ingredient in most gels is maltodextrin, a carbohydrate that has a high glycemic index and acts as a quick source of energy. You can choose from the following types of gels
- glucose‑fructose gels combine sugars that are transported into the blood by different systems, making their absorption faster and more efficient. This combination is considered one of the best ways to replenish energy,
- caffeine gels contain the stimulant caffeine, which can boost performance. Due to the effect of caffeine on digestion, it may be better for some individuals to save this gel until the end of a race or training session,
- electrolyte energy gels also take into account the loss of ions through sweat, and maintain internal electrolyte balance.
In addition to these substances, taurine, amino acids or vitamins are also added to energy gels .
When and How to Use Energy Gels?
Energy gels are a great sport supplement for physical activities lasting longer than 1 hour, when they help to replenish energy and maintain high performance. That is why gels are especially popular among cyclists or long‑distance runners. But they are also great as a backpack snack on a hike.
The recommended time to take the gel is before or during sports activity. Energy gels are concentrated energy drinks, and for proper absorption of all nutrients it is usually necessary (depending on the type and production technology of the specific product) to also drink water, which also helps with the digestion of sugar. Otherwise, dehydration may occur.
Energy gels can be a great asset, but they can also be a liability. Every individual reacts differently to a sudden surge of energy, and the body may sometimes protest. It is therefore wise to test them out beforehand; otherwise, you might be in for an unpleasant surprise on race day.
