Protein shakers
Choosing a protein shaker isn't rocket science, you just need to know when and how you want to use it. The minor differences in each fitness shaker are due to size, material and the way the contents are shaken.
Types of shaker
- A classic protein shaker has a capacity of around 600 ml, so you can comfortably mix up a double dose. If you don't want to have shaker rolls full of unmixed powder, be sure to pour the liquid first (it's also important to decide whether to drink your protein with milk or water).
- A mini shaker (with a capacity of around 250 ml) will help with the preparation of pre‑workout, amino acid mix or creatine. For these shakes, you don't need much water and a small shaker is a good tool. However, it can also come in handy if you prefer a stronger protein taste and don't need to dilute it as much.
- Shaker with reservoir is for those who want to keep their fitness life a little more organised. The removable trays are perfect for your next dose or other supplements and tablets.
Material
The most commonly used material is plastic. Plastic shakers need to be properly cared for if they are to last. Frequent washing can cause minor abrasions inside the shaker, where bacteria can later breed and cause an unpleasant smell. If you forget about the shaker overnight, that's not immediately a reason to replace it. But if it's almost walking around your room, it's better for your health to buy a new shaker.
Glass or stainless steel protein shakers are gaining in popularity, as they last much longer and, thanks to the quality of the material, are considerably more hygienic. Stainless steel shakers cannot be washed in the dishwasher, but are more robust.
Strainer or spring?
Perhaps the biggest shaker topic: is a shaker with a strainer or a spring (some call it a ball) better? It depends on what is more important to a person. A shaker with a strainer is not noisy and is more effective against larger lumps in the drink. But if seconds are the issue, you'll get faster results with a spring shaker.
