Ginseng Supplements
True ginseng, also known as Korean ginseng, is a perennial herb widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. Its active compounds are ginsenosides—saponins unique to plants of the Panax genus. Besides true ginseng, there are also American, Vietnamese, and Japanese varieties, though they contain fewer active ingredients.
Some other herbs, like ashwagandha (Indian ginseng), eleuthero (Siberian ginseng), or maca (Peruvian ginseng), also bear the name “ginseng” but do not belong to the Panax genus and lack ginsenosides as active compounds.
Benefits of Ginseng
Ginseng is classified as an adaptogen—a substance that helps the body adapt to physical and mental stress. Beyond its immune‑supportive effects, confirmed benefits of ginseng include:
- Enhancing cognitive function and memory;
- Supporting libido and sexual health;
- Benefiting the cardiovascular system;
- Regulating blood sugar levels.
Additionally, ginseng may boost athletic performance, alleviate menopausal symptoms, and acts as an antioxidant.
How to Take Ginseng?
Ginseng is typically taken as a standalone supplement, tea, or part of complex multivitamins and other supplements. The recommended daily dose of true ginseng extract ranges between 200‑400 mg. For other ginseng varieties, the recommended dose may vary based on the ginsenoside content.
